Keep More Of What Your Own Business Earns.
For sole proprietors and single-member LLCs across Michigan: home office, vehicle, equipment and self-employment tax handled properly, plus a straight answer about when an S-election is worth a look.
Schedule C Tax Preparation For Michigan Owners
When you run a business in your own name, or through a single-member LLC that has not elected otherwise, the business does not file a separate income tax return. Its profit lands on Schedule C, attached to your personal 1040, and that one schedule decides a lot: your income tax, your self-employment tax and how much you should be setting aside every quarter.
It is also where owners most often leave money behind. Mileage that was never logged, a home office nobody claimed, a truck bought in December with no one asking how to depreciate it. We handle sole proprietor tax preparation in Michigan as part of our tax services, and we ask the questions that turn those into deductions you can actually support.
The Questions That Decide Your Schedule C
Most owner-operated businesses run into the same four, every single year.
When An S-Election Starts To Make Sense
At some point a profitable sole proprietorship starts to look like a candidate for S-Corp status. The appeal is real: as an S corporation, the business pays you a reasonable salary through payroll, and the rest of the profit can come out as distributions that are not subject to self-employment tax.
It comes with obligations, though. An S corporation files its own S-Corp return on Form 1120-S, runs payroll and keeps cleaner books, and the savings have to outweigh all of that. We look at your numbers with you and give you a straight answer. If the math works, our S-Corporation formation service handles the election on Form 2553.
No Employer Is Withholding For You Anymore
As a sole proprietor, nobody takes tax out of your pay. The IRS expects it in four estimated payments during the year, and waiting until April can add an underpayment penalty to the bill. Our help with quarterly estimated tax payments sets the amounts from your real year-to-date numbers.
Schedule C Questions From Owner-Operators
Does a single-member LLC file its own tax return?
Not for federal income tax, in most cases. A single-member LLC owned by one individual is disregarded by default, so the business shows up on Schedule C with your 1040. The LLC still matters for payroll and sales tax registrations, and it can elect S-Corp or corporate treatment if that ever makes sense.
I kept my receipts in a shoebox. Is that a problem?
It is more common than you would think, and it is workable. We sort what you have, match it to your bank and card statements and build a clean year from it. Going forward, a simple bookkeeping routine during the year makes next April a lot shorter.
Can I deduct my phone, internet and meals?
Partly, in most cases. The business share of a phone or internet bill is generally deductible, and business meals are usually only partly deductible. Personal use and entertainment are not. We ask how each one is really used and claim what holds up, not what looks good on paper.
Do I need to file anything with the State of Michigan?
Your Schedule C profit flows onto your Michigan individual return along with the rest of your income, and some Michigan cities levy their own income tax too. If you sell taxable goods, sales tax is a separate filing altogether, and we can take that on as well.
