Sales Tax That Ties Out Every Single Month
Michigan sales and use tax calculated from your sales records, filed on schedule and reconciled in QuickBooks Online, so the money you collected for the state is never a surprise.
Sales Tax Filing And Compliance For Michigan Businesses
Sales tax is money you collect for the state and hold for a few weeks. The trouble starts when that money gets spent before the return is due, or when the return says one thing and the books say another.
We calculate what you owe from your sales records, file the Michigan return on time and reconcile the sales tax account in QuickBooks Online so it clears the way it should. It's part of our tax services and comes with every monthly package, alongside your use and withholding returns.
Sales tax sits closest to the businesses we know best. Retail and inventory-based businesses and restaurant and food service accounting clients file most often, and their returns are only as reliable as the monthly bookkeeping underneath them.
Michigan Keeps The Rate Simple
Michigan's general sales tax rate is a flat 6 cents on the dollar, with no county or city sales tax stacked on top, and use tax is charged at the same rate. Sales, use and withholding are reported together on Form 5080, generally due the 20th of the month after the period ends, with an annual return on Form 5081 to close out the year.
Where Michigan Sales Tax Takes Judgment
The rate is fixed. These are the parts that need someone paying attention.
A Month Of Sales Tax, From Register To Filed Return
Here is what we take care of each filing period.
- Taxable and exempt sales pulled from your point-of-sale or invoicing records
- Sales tax collected compared against what the books recorded
- Form 5080 prepared and filed by the due date
- The sales tax liability account reconciled in QuickBooks Online
- The annual Form 5081 prepared to close out the year
- Help responding to Michigan Treasury letters about the account
What Retailers And Restaurants Ask About Sales Tax
Do I need to register for Michigan sales tax before I open?
Yes, if you will be making taxable retail sales. Registration with the Michigan Department of Treasury should be done before your first taxable sale. If you're not sure whether what you sell is taxable at all, settle that first. It's one of the questions we answer while getting a new business set up.
What if my register report and my bank deposits don't match?
That's common, and it usually comes down to timing, card processing fees, refunds or tips mixed into deposits. We reconcile three sources every period: what the register says you sold, what landed in the bank and what the books recorded. The return gets filed from the reconciled number, not whichever report looked closest.
Can you fix sales tax returns that were filed wrong in the past?
Yes. We review the periods in question against your sales records, work out the difference and prepare corrected returns for Michigan. If you owe more, filing the correction sooner limits the interest. If you overpaid, we'll help you claim it back within the time Michigan allows.
Is sales tax filing included in the monthly packages?
Yes. Every monthly package includes sales, use, excise and withholding returns alongside the books and your business return. If sales tax is the only thing you need help with right now, we can scope that on its own, in writing, before any work begins.
