A Filed Return Isn't Always A Finished One

A late K-1, a corrected 1099, a missed deduction. We amend federal and Michigan returns properly, whoever prepared the original, and tell you honestly when a return is better left alone.

Amended Tax Return Preparation In Michigan

Finding out a filed return was wrong is more common than anyone admits. A K-1 shows up in May from a partnership you invested in. A brokerage sends a corrected 1099 after you filed. A deduction was missed, or a previous preparer put income on the wrong line. None of it is a disaster, but it does need fixing the right way.

We prepare amended federal and Michigan returns for individuals and businesses, including returns first prepared somewhere else. It's part of our tax services, and it starts with reading the original closely enough to know exactly what changes and what doesn't.

  • A Schedule K-1 that arrived after you filed
  • A corrected 1099 or W-2
  • Income, deductions or credits left off the original
  • A business return change that flows through to your 1040

Each Kind Of Return Has Its Own Fix

Amending isn't a single form. The right path depends on what was filed in the first place.

Personal Returns On Form 1040-X

Individual returns are corrected on Form 1040-X, which shows the original figures, the corrected figures and the reason for each change. Recent years can usually be filed electronically, and Michigan gets its own amended return whenever the change affects your state tax.

C-Corporation Returns On Form 1120-X

A C-Corporation corrects a filed Form 1120 with Form 1120-X. We work from your closed books, so the amended return agrees with the ledger and the corrected figures carry forward properly into next year.

S-Corporation Returns

An S-Corp amends by filing a corrected Form 1120-S marked as amended, then issuing corrected K-1s to every shareholder. That usually means the shareholders' personal returns need amending too, and we handle both sides in the right order.

Partnerships And Multi-Member LLCs

Partnership corrections follow their own rules. For many partnerships the fix goes through an administrative adjustment request rather than a simple refiled Form 1065, and partners may see the change in a later year. We confirm which rules apply before anything is filed.

Sometimes The Best Amendment Is None At All

Not every mistake calls for a 1040-X. The IRS corrects simple math errors on its own, and if a form or schedule was left off, it will usually write and ask for it. If the IRS has already sent a notice proposing a change, such as a CP2000 about unreported income, the right move is generally to respond to that notice rather than file an amendment. We help you read the letter and answer it.

Timing matters as well. To claim a refund, an amended return generally has to be filed within three years of the original filing or two years of paying the tax, whichever is later. When a correction means you owe more, filing sooner keeps interest from building.

When the original error traces back to the books, we correct the ledger too, so the amendment and next year's S-Corp tax return or partnership tax return start from the same numbers. And if a change would barely move the tax, we'll say so and let you decide.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Amend

Can you amend a return another preparer filed?

Yes. We'll need a complete copy of the original return and the documents behind it. We review it line by line, identify what needs correcting and prepare the amendment. If we spot other problems along the way, we'll show you what we found before deciding together what to fix, so there are no surprises on the corrected return.

How long does an amended return take to process?

Longer than an original return. The IRS processes amendments separately, and it can take several months before a refund or a final notice arrives. You can check the status online once it's in their system, and Michigan works on its own timeline. We give you a copy of everything filed so you always know where things stand.

My K-1 came after I filed. Do I have to amend?

If the K-1 changes your tax, usually yes. Some owners file an extension every year for exactly this reason, so the return waits for the K-1 instead of being redone. If you're invested in a partnership or S-Corp that routinely issues late K-1s, we'll talk about whether extending makes more sense going forward.
