From Shoebox To Closed Books, Year By Year.

A full year built, reconciled and closed in one engagement, plus catch-up for years that fell behind or files left by a previous preparer. You hear what shape the records are in before any work begins.

Annual And Catch-Up Bookkeeping In Michigan

Some owners keep decent records all year and only need someone to turn them into a finished set of books. Others are two or three years behind, or are holding a file from a previous preparer that nobody has trusted since. Annual bookkeeping covers both: a full year built, reconciled and closed, ready for the return and anyone else who needs to read it.

Before any work starts, we tell you up front what shape the records are in, what it will take to fix them and what we need from you, and the whole scope goes in writing. It is part of our bookkeeping services for owners across Michigan and virtually anywhere in the country.

  • Every month of the year coded and reconciled in QuickBooks Online
  • Year-end adjustments, accruals and depreciation recorded
  • A closed year with balances that tie to the bank
  • Books ready for the business return and your 1040

Where Your Records Might Be Starting From

Annual work starts from wherever the records actually are. Most owners recognize themselves in one of these.

Kept As You Went

You tracked income and expenses through the year but never reconciled or closed anything. We tie every account to its statements, fix what was miscoded and hand back a year that balances.

A Few Years Behind

The shoebox, the bank feed nobody categorized, the returns still waiting. We rebuild the oldest open year first and work forward, so each return can be prepared from finished books. Unfiled years are handled through our prior year unfiled returns service.

Inherited From Someone Else

A previous bookkeeper or preparer left a file that does not reconcile, or opening balances that do not match the last return. We trace the differences, correct them and document what changed so the next year starts clean.

From First Look To A Closed Year

Catch-up is a lot easier to live with when you know the order things happen in. Here it is.

1

An Honest Read On The Records

We look at what exists: bank and card statements, any QuickBooks Online file, prior returns and whatever a previous preparer left behind. Then we tell you plainly what condition it is all in.

2

A Written Scope Before Anything Is Touched

The years, accounts and deliverables are set out in an engagement letter, so you know exactly what we are taking on before the work begins.

3

The Oldest Year Rebuilt First

We code, reconcile and close one year at a time, starting with the oldest open year, and record the year-end adjustments that make each balance sheet hold up.

4

Handed Back Ready For Filing

Each closed year comes with a profit and loss and balance sheet, ready for the return. To keep the gap from reopening, monthly bookkeeping picks up where the catch-up ends.

What Owners Ask When The Books Are Behind

How far behind is too far to catch up?

There is rarely a point where a year cannot be rebuilt. Several years behind is common, and so are files abandoned partway through a year. Thin records make the work longer, and we will tell you that up front, but bank statements, card statements and whatever else survived are usually enough to build a year that balances.

What if I also have unfiled tax returns for those years?

Then the books come first and the returns follow, oldest year forward, so each one is prepared from real numbers. If letters from the IRS or Michigan Treasury have already arrived, we help you respond to them as part of getting current rather than leaving them in a drawer.

Is once a year enough going forward?

It can be for a business with light activity and nobody asking for statements during the year. Owners who have been through a catch-up often prefer a steadier rhythm afterward, and quarterly bookkeeping is a sensible middle ground between once a year and every month.

What do you need from me to get started?

Access to bank and credit card statements for the years involved, any existing QuickBooks Online file, prior tax returns and whatever records you kept, however rough. Everything moves by secure file exchange, so nothing has to be mailed or carried anywhere.
