Missing Years Filed, In Order, Without The Lecture
Back returns rebuilt from whatever records exist and filed with the IRS and the State of Michigan in a sensible order, so the missing years stop following you around.
Help With Unfiled Tax Returns In Michigan
Unfiled years rarely start with a decision. A hard season, a family matter, a bookkeeper who left, a year when the records were a mess and it felt easier to wait. Then one year becomes three, and opening that drawer starts to feel heavier than the work inside it.
We don't judge how you got here. We find out what's missing, rebuild what we can from the records that exist, and file the returns in order with the IRS and the State of Michigan. It's a regular part of our tax services, and it always starts the same way: by taking stock.
Taking Stock Comes Before Filing Anything
Getting current is a sequence, and the order matters.
Find Out What Is Actually Missing
We help you get your IRS wage and income transcripts, which show what employers, banks and clients reported under your name, and confirm which federal and Michigan years were never filed.
Rebuild The Numbers For Each Year
Bank statements, 1099s, W-2s, sales reports, a shoebox of receipts. We reconstruct income and expenses year by year and tell you plainly where the records are thin.
File In A Sensible Order
Returns are prepared year by year, federal and Michigan together, business returns before the personal returns that depend on them. Recent years can usually be e-filed. Older years generally go on paper.
Set Things Up So It Doesn't Happen Again
Once you're current, we look at what caused the gap and fix that too, whether the answer is monthly books, estimated payments or simply a reminder in February.
Why Filing Sooner Usually Works In Your Favor
Penalties and interest keep building while a return sits unfiled, and the penalty for not filing is generally steeper than the one for not paying. Filing, even when you can't pay the full balance yet, usually stops the larger one from growing.
For some people there's money on the other side. If you were owed a refund for a year you never filed, the window to claim it generally closes three years after that return's original due date. We check for that early.
Where a business never kept books for a year, we build them first through annual bookkeeping, then prepare the return from real numbers. Each personal Form 1040 that depends on the business follows, so every year agrees with the one before it.
No Promises About Penalties, Only Straight Answers
We won't promise that penalties disappear or that a balance gets smaller. Anyone who guarantees that before seeing your file is guessing. What we will do is give you an honest picture of where you stand, file accurate returns in order, and explain the payment options available if there's a balance you can't pay at once.
If a notice has already arrived, we'll help you understand it and respond. Sometimes the IRS has prepared a substitute return on its own, and those usually leave out deductions and expenses you were entitled to claim.
What People Ask When They're Behind
How many years back do I need to file?
It depends on your situation, and we'll look at your records before answering. In many cases the IRS focuses on the most recent six years when deciding whether someone is back in good standing, but that isn't a universal rule, and Michigan keeps its own records. We check both before recommending which years to file.
Is it too late to file a return from several years ago?
No. The IRS and Michigan will accept a late return for any year, and filing is almost always better than waiting for them to act first. A refund for an older year may no longer be available, and penalties may apply, but getting the returns in stops the problem from growing and gives you a real number to work with.
What if I don't have my records anymore?
That's common, and it's workable. Banks can provide old statements, IRS transcripts show what was reported under your name, and clients or vendors can often resend documents. We rebuild each year from what can be found and tell you honestly where the records are thin.
I own a business. Do the business returns come first?
Usually, yes. A 1065 or 1120-S produces the K-1 that feeds your personal return, so the business year has to be finished before the personal year can be. We map out the order at the start, so each return has what it needs by the time it's prepared.
