One Federal Tax ID, Matched Everywhere It Goes

We apply for your employer identification number, keep the IRS confirmation on file and make sure the number, the legal name and the entity type agree everywhere the business uses them.

EIN Application Service For Michigan Businesses

An EIN is the nine-digit number the IRS assigns to a business, and it ends up everywhere: the bank account, the payroll platform, 1099s, Michigan tax registrations and every return you file. Getting one is quick. Getting it with the right responsible party, the right entity type and a legal name that matches the state record is where things go sideways.

We handle the application as part of our business formation and registration work, usually right after your LLC formation filing or incorporation is approved. The confirmation letter goes into your permanent records, and the number is recorded in QuickBooks Online and everywhere else it needs to live.

Businesses That Need Their Own EIN

The IRS rules are specific. These are the situations we see most often.

Anyone With Employees

If you pay wages, you need an EIN to file Form 941 and issue W-2s. That includes a single-member LLC with employees, even though it can use the owner's Social Security number for income tax.

Corporations And Partnerships

Every corporation, S or C, and every partnership or multi-member LLC needs its own EIN to file Form 1120, 1120-S or 1065 and to issue K-1s to its owners.

Sole Owners Who Want One Anyway

A sole proprietor or single-member LLC without employees is not always required to have one, but it keeps your Social Security number off contractor W-9s, and many banks ask for it to open a business account.

A Business That Changed Shape

Incorporating a sole proprietorship or turning a partnership into a corporation generally means a new EIN. A simple name change usually does not. We sort out which applies before accounts get opened under the wrong number.

What You Have In Hand When We Are Done

Not just a number, but the paper trail behind it and every place it needs to be recorded.

  • Your EIN, applied for under the correct entity type and responsible party
  • The IRS confirmation letter (CP 575) saved to your permanent records
  • The legal name on the EIN matched to what is on file with the State of Michigan
  • What your bank needs to open the business account in the right name
  • The number ready for payroll in Gusto, ADP or QuickBooks Payroll when you have employees
  • Michigan Department of Treasury registration for sales, use or withholding tax where it applies
  • The EIN recorded in QuickBooks Online and on the W-9 you hand to customers

Where Your EIN Goes To Work Next

The number only earns its keep once it is connected to everything else. With employees, it anchors your weekly or bi-weekly payroll processing and every quarterly Form 941. If you pay contractors, it goes on each 1099-NEC we prepare and file in January.

It also has to match. When the name on the EIN, the state record and the bank account disagree, IRS letters follow and payroll deposits get tangled. We check all three at the start, which is far easier than untangling them after the first quarter's filings.

EIN Questions Owners Ask Us

Does a single-member LLC need an EIN?

It needs one as soon as it has employees, because payroll tax filings are made under the LLC's own number. Without employees, the IRS lets the owner use a Social Security number for income tax, but many banks want an EIN to open a business account, so most owners get one anyway.

I lost my EIN. Can you find it?

Usually. It appears on the IRS confirmation letter, prior-year business returns, payroll filings and often on bank records. If none of those turn up, the IRS can confirm the number to an authorized person at the business. We help you track it down before anyone applies for a second one.

Is an EIN the same as a Michigan tax account?

No. The EIN is federal. Businesses that collect sales tax, owe use tax or withhold Michigan income tax from wages also register with the Michigan Department of Treasury, and that registration asks for the EIN. We handle both so the federal and state records line up from the start.
